An off white lotion containing Permethrin 5.0% w/v with Methyl Paraben 0.08% w/v and Propyl Paraben 0.02% w/v as preservatives.
Permethrin acts on the sodium channel current that regulates the polarization of the nerve cell membrane of the louse or mite. This leads to delayed repolarization and subsequent paralysis of the louse or mite.
Pharmacology: Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid, which is active against a broad range of pests including lice, ticks, fleas, mites and other arthropods. Absorption studies indicants that 2% or less of the amount applied is absorbed systemically. Permethrin is detectable in residual amounts on the hair for at least 10 days following a treatment. Permethrin is rapidly metabolized by ester hydrolysis to inactive metabolites. It is primarily eliminated in the urine.
For the treatment of scabies.
Ensure that the skin is clean, dry and cool prior to treatment.
Adults & children: apply thoroughly to all body parts from the head to the soles of the feet, paying particular attention to all the folds and creases. Scabies rarely infests the scalp of adults, although the hairline, neck, temple and forehead may be infested in infants and geriatric patients. Leave medication on for 8 - 14 hours, and then wash off completely. Usually a 30 ml bottle is sufficient for any adult.
Infants under 2 months: not recommended.
One application is generally curative.
Persistent pruritus may be experienced after treatment. This is rarely a sign of treatment failure and is not an indication for re-treatment. Itching usually persists for a few days or even weeks after treatment even though the mite has been killed. This is because it takes time for the allergic reaction to subside.
No instance of accidental ingestion has been reported. If ingested, gastric lavage and general supportive measures should be employed.
Hypersensitivity to permethrin, any of its compounds, other synthetic pyrethrins.
Permethrin is safe and effective in children 2 years of age and older. Data on safety and effectiveness in children between 2 and 23 months of age are limited. This product should therefore only be used in this age group on the advice and supervision of a physician. Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membrane. Should this happen, wash thoroughly with plenty of water. Not recommended for infants less than 2 months of age.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: There are no adequate or well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Problems in humans have not been documented. Therefore consideration should be given to discontinue nursing temporarily or withholding the drug while the mother is nursing.
